Sidney Crosby scored the game winner in a shootout (above) and the jerseys, which reintroduce the Penguins original colors, were a huge marketing success. Quietly, the Penguins have announced that the jersey has now been retired. From the May 28 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an article by Shelly Anderson:
This was certainly news to me. Obviously it is a marketing move and will lead to thousands more jerseys being sold at $150 a pop. It will be interesting if the team keeps the color scheme or moves in another direction. Hit the poll on the right and share your thoughts. The Penguins probably will unveil a new jersey/uniform for the game. The design -- and whether it will become the team's next "third jersey" -- is still in the works. The blue alternate uniform that the Penguins debuted in the 2008 Winter Classic and kept to wear in select games was retired after the 2009-10 season.

Hhhmmm. From a business and marketing perspective, I certainly understand why they'd unveil a new jersey (particularly if those shirts now cost upward of $100). From a fashion perspective, those baby-blues are most aesthetically pleasing to the eye (soft color with a simple logo). From a historical perspective, the baby-blues are a nice throwback tribute as they represent the original era but,(and correct me if I'm wrong) the most signficant historical moments of the franchise occured with team wearing black and gold (drafting of Mario and Sidney, all four Stanley Cup victories.... ). Also, from a true Pittsburgh Sports Fan perspective, the black and gold simply represents Pittsburgh in the sports realm.
